Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is the unsung hero of Northern Tanzania. While the Serengeti and Ngorongoro claim the headlines, Tarangire quietly delivers some of the most atmospheric and visually striking safari experiences in all of East Africa — and with far fewer vehicles.

The park’s defining feature is its ancient baobab trees. These magnificent giants, some over a thousand years old, punctuate the savannah like sculptures, their twisted silhouettes creating an otherworldly landscape that is utterly unique to Tarangire. Photographers and artists are drawn here for the sheer beauty of the light filtering through baobab branches at golden hour.

During the dry season (June–November), the Tarangire River becomes a lifeline, drawing wildlife from across the ecosystem. This is when the park earns its reputation as home to the largest elephant herds in Northern Tanzania — families of 200 or more are not uncommon, and watching them wade through the river, spray water over their calves, and move through the baobabs is one of Africa’s most moving wildlife encounters.

Tarangire is also a stronghold for rare species like the fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and the ashy starling — a bird found nowhere else on Earth. With over 550 bird species recorded, it rivals any destination on the continent for avian diversity.
